DIY Painting and Decorating for Walls and Ceilings

Beautiful Homes

Can we all agree that Beautiful Homes are kept beautiful with regular cleaning and regular updates. This is literally the only way to keep home decor looking fresh.
Good Quality soft furnishings and upholstery can improve the aesthetics, temperature and mood of ANY room, but even the most beautiful furnishings can't improve the look of stained ceilings, walls, skirtings and doors.

While we may be able to cover awful furnishings with a few throws or a slip cover, discoloured or damaged walls, ceilings and skirtings are glaringly obvious and can't be hidden as easily.

DIY Painting and Decorating

Applying a few coats of fresh paint to these areas, will dramatically freshen and uplift the atmosphere of ANY room.  Even the look of bumpy and uneven surfaces can be vastly improved with a good sanding and, a few coats of good quality fresh paint.
The choice of paint colour, especially for walls and ceilings, can have a massive impact on the sense of space.
Rooms with dark walls or ceilings immediately give a 'below-ground' aesthetic. There are beautiful and glamorous examples of such rooms, but one common theme, is the reduced sense of space.

The atmosphere can feel similar to that of caves and underground caverns.  If you have small rooms, the use of lighter paint colours will definitely increase the sense of space in the room.   Basically a brighter room looks less squashed and cave-like.

Living In A Tiny Home

We currently reside in a tiny apartment with south facing natural light.  On bright and VERY sunny spring and summer days, the natural light does a good job of brightening up the atmosphere in the back rooms. The light in the front rooms however, appears dimmer, I guess the gigantic tree canopy in front of the window doesn't help matters.

White Paint For Dark Spaces

I can personally vouch for the use of white and similar shades of paint to help to infuse brightness into any tiny space.  All of our rooms are now decorated with white paint, which has vastly reduced the feeling of living in a 'tiny burrow'.
One thing we have to bear in mind is that although white fresh paint brightens and freshens our space, it also gets dirty fast from things like:
cosmetic products: can stain the walls
leaning on the walls leaves marks
dust build-up from open windows
steam changes the texture of wall paint
make up brush with pink blusher
Our walls especially, need regular updates to stay fresh. We aim to repaint around every 5 to 8 months.
