Sustainable Home Decor in a Tiny Home

Sustainable Home Decor means different things depending on who you ask, but overall we seek to reduce the negative environmental impact of the tools and supplies used in the creation of Home Decor.

Craftsman aspire to reduce their carbon footprint in as many ways as they can.
Pollution

Non-Toxic Adhesives

I steer clear of using strong toxic glues when crafting, unless there are no alternatives, for example here.   As a result I've been able to reduce crafting with strong glue to just two to three times per year.

Non-Toxic Fabrics

I try to avoid buying  fabrics made of petroleum, for example vinyl fabrics.  When I do use this type of textile, I used reclaimed sources.

Supplies Sourced As A By-Product of Conservation

We source our food (meat) as a by product of conservation. These conservation farms often sell fleece and shedded wool, which is very useful for padding upholstery and soft furnishing items.   This allows me to reduce the amount of synthetic textiles I use for my projects.

Hand-Crafted Functional Items

I repurpose all of my scrap decor fabric and supplies, to create functional items.  This includes using them to stuff cushion, pad applique designs and to making 'third-party' items, which are none-decor related.  I'll show you my favourite projects that I've hand-crafted with left overs in a moment.

The method of protecting, maintaining and repairing the polyfoam cushion pads, means that we never need to buy substandard mass-produced furniture that will inevitably end up in a land-fill every few years.

How to Repurpose Left-Over Decor Fabric For New Projects

Ok, remember I said that I make 'third-party' items with left over decor fabrics?  Well,   I often have left over pieces of varying sizes after a home decor project,  however they are never quite wide or long enough to make extra soft furnishings.   I often hand-stitch Go-bags of varying sizes, and I also brand the bags with my thread-painted  logo.  Below you can see a few examples of the Go bags and the 'parent'  soft furnishing / upholstery projects.

The Red and Yellow Curtains / Red and Yellow Go-Bag

While renovations were carried out in the bathroom and kitchen, I decided to take down the blinds.  I had lots of random fabric that I had intended to make cushions with. so  I used most of it to hand-stitch these  Yellow and Red Kitchen curtains to cover the kitchen windows.   I then hand-stitched the left over fabric pieces together and made this colourful and bright little Go-Bag.

Red Bedroom Curtains and Grey Window Box Seat Cushions | Red and Grey Go-Bag

Our Beautiful tree canopy gets a heavy pruning late in the year. While this helps to reduce shading during the day, there is nothing to block out the street lights or Shard Lights at night.   I made these fully lined red curtains to shade out the lights streaming through the bedroom window at night. I saved the decor fabric remnants and combined them with the left over chenille fabric from the Window Box Seat Project.

Actually, I like this Red and Grey bag  so much that I made two of them.

There are a million ways to repurpose left-over decor fabric and supplies.

It's even possible to substitute regular DIY Supplies for alternatives. For example my favourite bolster cushion project has an inner core of Man-sized beach towels. They have kept their shape and 'bounce-back-ability' for years.

Over To You Creative One !

As the very creative person that you clearly are, I'd love for you to share your methods for sustainable DIY home decor.   For example, how do you make use of your decor fabric remnants?
